The Department of Veterans Affairs has announced an expansion of VA home loan benefits to include financing for energy-efficient home upgrades at the time of purchase or refinance. The new Energy Improvement Rider allows veterans to add up to $25,000 for qualifying improvements.
Eligible upgrades include solar panel installation, high-efficiency HVAC systems, insulation, energy-efficient windows, and electric vehicle charging stations. The improvements must meet Energy Star or equivalent certification standards.
The VA estimates that the energy improvements will save participating veterans an average of $2,400 annually in utility costs, more than offsetting the additional mortgage payment. The program also supports the administration's broader clean energy goals.
VA home loans already offer significant advantages including zero down payment, no private mortgage insurance, and competitive interest rates. The energy upgrade addition makes the benefit even more attractive for the 20 million eligible veterans and service members.
Lenders participating in the VA loan program are updating their systems to accommodate the new benefit, with full implementation expected by July 2026. The VA is also partnering with approved contractors to ensure quality installations.
